she trimmed back
the eponychium
and watched
as the bright red
sprouted along the
nail bed. the exposed
tissue and skin caught
a whiff
of air and began
to burn and tingle and sting.
the thought runs
rampant in her mind
that in time she
would become accustomed
to wearing such a silly
thing; a diamond encrusted
finger ring.
so she trimmed and trimmed
her ownself
removing any
evidence
that she herself
was whole.
